Chinese Eating in America

2019, 8:23 minutes video documentary, Tianyu Shi

Chinese Eating in America is a short documentary orchestrated by Tianyu Shi, and the film delves into the creation of a Chinese meal by a Chinese international student in the US. In the prelude of the documentary, several Chinese international students from various regions recall their favorite dishes that reflect on the unique flavors in their memory. Next, Tian, one of the interviewees, creates a Chinese meal for his friends from ingredients obtained at Price Chopper, a local US grocery store. The food satiates the international students and acts as a vehicle for cultural rehabilitation, as the familiar taste and gathering reestablish a tangible connection to their homeland. Simultaneously, the preparation and consumption of Chinese food prompt the unfolding of cultural negotiation and reconciliation--precisely via cooking with American ingredients to “invent” and revitalize an ethnic experience. Through a series of luscious close-ups and long shots, the video offers a peek into a dynamic Chinese kitchen scene where unexpected colors of the ingredients collide, and energetic sounds and movement become symphonic. The diversified, alternating cooking methods such as chopping, smashing, churning, mixing, and stir-frying, together compose a lively Chinese gastronomic spectacle. Above all, the gathering of friends flooded with satisfying smiles and delightful chatter gets even better with a toast of beer, no matter where you are or where you are from.
